It’s hard to believe it’s over eighteen years that it all began for me, my Hockey Journey, not as CrazyKennys but as the HockeyShop (note the 2 words intentionally joined as one).
As a long time hockey fan I took the opportunity to get involved in the sport that I loved, albeit in a different city and with a different team to the one I’d always supported.
However, that being said, I consider myself fortunate to have been “around” at that time to experience the birth of a hockey club that ultimately, love them or hate them, helped change British Ice Hockey forever.
The Sheffield Steelers celebrate their 20th Anniversary with a Festival of Hockey scheduled for Saturday August 27th in a nostalgia extravaganza.
Check out the match night programme from 11th January 1992, their opponents that night were the Haringay Racers.A quick look at the Club information inside the left hand cover of the programme shows the following information:
General Manager (GM) Ronnie Wood #7, Club Coach Ron Shudra #24 and for Marketing, Steve Nemeth #10 and Ron Shudra #24.
A host of “legends” will be returning to play one more time, here’s just two, as they were way back in 1993 – we regularly had a player or two pop in to promote the club and the shop.
Check out these former players who have pledged to return, the “who’s who” list, so far, is:
Ron Shudra, Tim Cranston, Tommy Plommer, Jason Lafreniere, coach Mike Blaisdell, Rick Brebant, Denis Vial, Mike Peron, Wayne Cowley, Tony Hand, David Longstaff, Chris Kelland, Andre Malo, Les Millie, Scott Neil and Pasi Raitenan plus local lads Andy Havenhand Rob Saunders and Alan “Haggis” Hague.
And then there’s the Legends from their festival oppnents, the Cardiff Devils, with past stars such as John Lawless, Doug McEwen, Steve Moria, Shannon Hope, Nicky Chinn, Merv Priest, Peter Smith, Hilton Ruggles, Nicky Chinn, Paul Heavey, Vezio Sacratini all returning.
For Steelers and Devils fans everywhere it’s going to be a hell of day.
